Due to Covid19 social distancing has affected all aspects of children’s education and priority has been given to finding new ways of making remote learning engaging enough. English Language is also a subject that is missing out on the benefits of collaborative learning and can benefit from a digital learning environment. This is why we created six unique maps which allow players to engage in adventures while honing their English-speaking skills!
The most important contribution of the project is the mainstreaming of new technologies, such as the Minecraft MMO environment for ELT. The project will deliver a Minecraft game which complements A1 Level English of the CEFR and covers the fundamentals for entering A2.
Each map allows the Player to revise different areas of language. Whether it be the airport, shopping mall, a city or an island from a classic novel, the Player will know the necessary vocabulary after playing the games!
Map 1: Airport. The Player learns that all of their luggage is lost in the parking lot and has to retrieve it. After that, they get to buy a ticket to New York, check their luggage in and go through Airport security. Once they do that, they need to find their gate and learn the basics of safe air travel. After a short quiz checking their knowledge of rules on an aircraft, they fly to New York, retrieve their suitcase and find the person responsible for taking them to the hotel.
Map 2: Around the City. The Player starts out at a Dog Park playing fetch with their Dog. Unfortunately, the Dog goes missing and the Player goes on an adventure to find him. They follow tips from locals and find out parts of the mystery. Once they find the person responsible for stealing the Dog and find their apartment, the Player needs to solve a puzzle and go into the apartment from the balcony (maybe there is something hiding in the trees?) and be reunited with their beloved Dog.
Map 3: Green School. The Player starts out in a school. They meet teachers and learn about pollution and the environment. They get to look for flowers and plant them, they listen to a text all about recycling, gather and throw out trash into correct recycling bins and finally, write down sentences connected with all of the topics mentioned in the lesson.
Map 4: Shopping Mall. The Player is at a shopping mall, where they get to revise their knowledge of shop related vocabulary. They will go shopping for clothes, help their mum buy groceries, get a present for their sister and make a withdrawal at the ATM!
Map 5: Throwing a party. The Player finds themselves in a classroom with their colleagues planning a party. They need to plan when to have the party, where to have it and what they need. After the teacher accepts the party, the students go shopping for the necessary supplies. They get to learn about British culture.
Map 6: Treasure Island. The Player becomes an expert archeologist tasked with finding buried pirate treasure to give it to a Museum! After they travel to a remote island, the Player is tasked with picking up parts of a boat and learning what they are responsible for. After having done that, the Player gets to meet the Oracle to test their knowledge of the novel “Treasure Island”. After talking with some Pirates, the Player gets a hold of the treasure and brings it back to the Museum.
Follow Me to Minecraft harnesses the power of Minecraft to create a fun learning experience through activities aligned to level A1 of the CEFR and are designed to focus on the skills and knowledge required by English language learners to communicate successfully at this level. Problem-based learning enables players to embrace complexity, find relevance and joy in their learning, and enhance their capacity to make creative contributions to real-world problems.
Each map takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes to finish.
